What does it mean when you are rejected because you are overqualified for the job? What does it mean you hear that line over and over again? When you hear this line from several employers, you need to consider the following:

1) Review/Edit Your Resume

Is your resume over 2-3 pages long? If so, it’s too long! Review your resume while keeping in mind the jobs you are targeting.  Don’t exaggerate your prior experiences and don’t put an objective with higher titles than the jobs you’re applying for.

2) Plan Your Interview

Review the job description very well before the interview. Don’t provide experiences that are not includes in the job requirements. If the employer asks you for additional experiences, you answer them, but don’t volunteer more roles that could put you out of the next step. The hiring manager will worry that you’ll want a higher salary because you have more experience than they want. So, unless they as for it, keep it yourself.

3) Salary Expectations

You should know the salary range for the job you are interviewing for. Your salary expectations should fall within that range. Don’t expect to negotiate at the end of the process, because you might lose that opportunity on the way. Show the employer that you are aware of the salary range and are okay with it.

4) Close The Interview

When the interview is over, ask for the next step. Recap the interview, express your interest in the job, and ask for the next step.

5) Follow-up

Don’t forget to follow-up with a Thank You letter, a hand-written one sets you apart from others. Either method your chose, make sure you express your interest and remind them of what you offer.

We hope you’re finding these tips helpful. Let us know if you have questions, other suggestions, or issues pertaining overqualification!
